TRAVEL DETAILS
The easiest way to arrive at Puno, Peru is to fly into Lima, Peru. From there you can fly to Juliaca, Peru and take a taxi, minivan collectivo or bus to Puno which is 45 minutes from Puno.
Or you can take a train from Lima to Arequipa. From Arequipa you can take a bus to Puno which will be much cheaper, but will take more time.
Or, you could arrive early and visit Cuzco and Machu Picchu while adjusting to the altitude, then come by train from Cuzco to Puno.
LAN AIRLINES SOUTH AMERICA AIRPASS
The airlines Lan Chile and Lan Peru are owned by the same company. If you purchase your international ticket with Lan from either North America, Mexico or Europe, you are eligible to buy a South America Airpass on their website. (This is the link from their North American site.) A South America Airpass from Lan will give you huge discounts of 50 - 60 % on Internal flights within South America. This is very helpful if you are flying from Lima, Peru to Juliaca, Peru (the nearest airport to Puno) and back to Lima, or want to visit Cuzco or fly to La Paz, Bolivia, to many cities in Chile or to Rapa Nui. A minimum of three segments are necessary in order to purchase a South America Airpass.
You can also buy Lan's South America Airpass if you are traveling on the following airlines: American Airlines, British Air, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines JAL, Malév, Quantas, Royal Jordanian, South Africa Airways, Alitalia and Aeroméxico. However, the discount on your internal flights is less, more like 40%, but still worthwhile.
Lan's South America Airpass must be purchased at least 14 days before your first flight. It is a great savings!
TRANSFERS FROM JULIACA, PERU AIRPORT TO OUR PUNO HOTEL
We will be happy to organize a transfer for you from the Juliaca Airport to the Hotel Libertador. Prices will be determined by the number of people. (The more people traveling with you, the cheaper it becomes.) Please let us know if you require an airport transfer.
TRAVEL OPTIONS IN BOLIVIA
Crillon Tours, our wonderful Bolivian Tour Company, are offering us some fantastic pre or post-Activation packages in Bolivia. These include visits to the fascinating Inca Utama Hotel in Huatajata which has an observatory as well as a Kallawaya Museum. (The Kallawayas are the traditional healers of Bolivia who live in remote mountain areas.) Crillon can also arrange visits to the sacred islands of the Incas: Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna (Islands of the Sun and Moon). Plus, if you are staying at the Inca Utama Hotel, they have half day tours to the incredible ancient site of Tiwanaku that is not to be missed. The Hotel Libertador is offering us our special group rates for those who wish to arrive a few days early in order to acclimate to the altitude. This is highly recommended. Or you may wish to stay a few extra days.
